PRECARIOUS CITIZENS

2019 / Design research

In Collaboration with Rosalie Apituley and Lara Klingenberg.

This project in the 'Probe' hosts an exhibition about the 'precarious citizen' of Arnhem. Based on a sociological research (Daniel Miller) that focusses on what people's interiors can tell us. A research to the voice of the precarious object. According to anthropologist Daniel Miller, every object within an interior has a voice. "Objects take a place in a room with or without a reason and therefore tell something about the owner.”
Thereby language can be defensive, so by studying people's interior different information can go through different filters (interpretation). This approach formed the base for the exhibition. In order to research the actual meaning of the theme "precariousness" Lara Klingenberg, Rosalie Apituley and Vicky-Lynn Geerdink went on a one to one journey through Arnhem and let the objects talk. Who are the precarious, instable or insecure citizens of Arnhem? What do the objects tell us? In this exhibition five stories were depicted for exposure in order to give us a pure insight in an everyday interpretation of security or insecurity.
